Summer is just a few months away. Does your swimming pool need some care and attention?
The winter has been hard in parts of the country which can bring weathering damage and the need for repairs.
This month we give you the low-down on renovations for your pool.
Safety upgrades
As much as swimming pools are fun for you and your family, there are sometimes dangers too. For example, any break in the paved area surrounding your swimming pool could cause a trip hazard. Reeds, weeds, or moss growing around the pool could also lead to skidding and falling. You can combat this with weeding around the pool and just keeping an eye on overgrowth during the colder months.
We also recommend good lighting to improve visibility around your swimming pool. Poor lighting can lead to serious accidents. Proper lighting adds atmosphere to evening swims and highlights pool depth for anyone wanting to jump in from the sides.
Leak detection and repair
Every pool owner should have a basic understanding of leaks and repairs and how to spot when they’re needed.
One of the best ways to find leaks is by checking water levels. If the water level drops or you see an unusual number of bubbles there’s usually a leak. Leaks in swimming pools can be costly and can release harmful chemicals into the soil and planting surrounding your pool. Also look for cracked pool sides, which could lead to leaks, or peeling plaster. Unclean water is a sign that your pump might not be working correctly. A drop in water temperature could indicate a problem with your pool heater.
It’s always best to call a professional as soon as possible to check and repair any damage.
Deck and patio renovations
It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the state of surfaces around your swimming pool. Consider resurfacing or upgrading your pool side with materials like stamped concrete or natural stone for improved aesthetics and safety.
Regular maintenance routine
This is our best advice to make the most of your swimming pool. Create a regular maintenance routine to preserve its quality and beauty. This makes sense for safety and will help keep costs down in the long run.
Checking your pool’s pH levels is very important for pool maintenance. pH is the scale of acidity and alkaline where the middle point of the scale is neutral. Anything above the mid-point is alkaline and anything below is acidic.
Ideally you’ll have a pH level of between 7.0 and 7.6, providing a good balance between alkaline and acid so it’s comfortable when you get into the water. This will prevent stinging eyes and won’t turn your blonde hair green.
It’s a good idea to test your swimming pool water pH balance weekly – this can be done with dip strip tests which are easily bought online. You simply dip the strip into the water and follow the colour chart provided to see your pH balance.
Skimming is another regular job too. If you spot some debris, for example leaves or bugs in your pool, just skim the surface to remove them. This prevents build up and clogging in your pool vents.
What this means
Overall, your pool needs a little bit of extra care so you can enjoy it to the full. It’s just like your lawn or a large outdoor plant in a pot. A little maintenance means huge benefits and it can help keep costs down overall… which is always a good thing. Get in touch with Mosaic Swimming Pools and Spas to prepare your pool for summer fun.
